RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner, operated by the White Star Line, that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912 after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, United Kingdom, to the city of New York, United States . Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 died, making it the deadliest sinking of a single ship to that time.[a] It remains the deadliest peacetime sinking of a superliner or cruise ship .[4] The disaster garnered public attention, provided foundational material for the disaster film genre, and has inspired many works of art.

RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time she entered service and the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line. She was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Thomas Andrews, the shipyard's chief naval architect, was killed in the disaster.[5] The Titanic was under the command of Captain Edward Smith,[6] who went down with the ship. The liner was carrying some of the world's wealthiest people, as well as hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia, and elsewhere in Europe, who were seeking a new life in the United States and Canada.
The first-class accommodations were designed to be the pinnacle of comfort and luxury, with a gym, swimming pool, libraries, first-class restaurants and opulent cabins. A high-power radiotelegraph transmitter was available for sending "frame charts" of passengers and for operational use of the ship.[7] The Titanic had advanced safety features, such as remotely activated watertight compartments and watertight doors, which contributed to her reputation as "unsinkable".
Titanic was equipped with 16 lifeboat davits, each capable of lowering three lifeboats, for a total of 48 lifeboats; she only carried 20 lifeboats, four of which were collapsible and proved difficult to launch as she sank.[8] Together, the 20 lifeboats could hold 1,178 people, about half the number of passengers on board and one-third the number of passengers the ship could have carried at full capacity (according to the maritime safety regulations of the epoch). When the ship sank, many of the lifeboats that had been lowered were only half full.
On April 15 , 1912 , the RMS Titanic sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean . The largest and most luxurious ship in the world , the Titanic was also one of the most technologically compartments advanced . The ship had 16 watertight designed to keep it afloat if damaged . This led to the belief that the ship was unsinkable . However , only four days into its maiden voyage , the Titanic struck an iceberg near Newfoundland , Canada . The collision damaged the ship and its watertight compartments . With a limited number of lifeboats , many passengers could not escape the ship . Only hours after the collision , the Titanic sunk , taking about 1,500 passengers with her . The fate of the Titanic led to new international agreements to prevent future disasters , such as the creation of an International Ice Patrol that would alert ships of icebergs . In addition , the first International Convention of Safety of
